So, considering that Supernatural often plays pretty loosely with its spells, magic, lore and etc., I’m probably reading too much into this, but in 7.22 and 7.23 it felt like they were pointedly drawing attention to Crowley’s summoning symbol. In the image from the finale (the one with the booze) the shot lingered on the symbol for AGES, forcing us to look at it. It has been pretty strongly hinted that Crowley isn’t a demon (or at least isn’t JUST a demon) and that got me thinking: is this supposed to be some kind of hint or was someone just very proud of their magical looking summoning circle?

Which lead me to wondering: have we ever seen this specific symbol before? And have we ever seen anyone use this symbol to summon Crowley before?

As far as I can tell, the answer is no.

Crowley is summoned in 7.01, but the shot is set up such that we never actually get to see the summoning symbol, just the bowl of herbs. So, I tried looking earlier in the show, Crowley was summoned by Bobby in 6.04 HOWEVER, he doesn’t use the symbol seen in season 7, instead he uses the Sigil of Azazel, otherwise known as the Seal of Saturn. He seems to have added some extra symbols, but that’s about the only difference from the basic symbol. John Winchester used this symbol in 2.01 to summon Azazel, but logically that makes sense.

I tried peeking around to see if the symbol actually appeared in any mystical or spiritual texts, but I couldn’t spot anything. However, it seems strange that they would draw so much attention to the symbol only to have it be completely meaningless? If anyone has any theories or if anyone can identify the circle I would love to hear from you.

I have been thinking the same thing. I’ve gone through all the symbols and sigils we’ve seen in the show and I haven’t found any that are the same. At first I thought it might be a purgatory symbol but the opening symbol in 6x22 is much different. I’ve also gone over all the summoning sigils for demons and it isn’t there either.

However, it does have elements in common with both some of the demon sigils and summoning symbols for veve. (Though those tend to be more fluid.)

Anyway, I’m kinda beginning to think that this doesn’t have any significance outside the realm of the show. Still, it does seem odd that they would linger on it for so long.
